Chinese Fried Sweet Potato Balls

Simple, slightly sweet finger food. If you want to dress it up a little, dusting it with powdered sugar or dipping it in palm sugar or maple sugar really adds to it.

Chinese Fried Sweet Potato Balls

1 lb sweet potatoes
½ c mochiko
¾ – 1 c white rice flour
¼ c sugar
1 tsp baking powder


Peel and cube sweet potato. Steam for 10 minutes until soft. Transfer to a large bowl and mash. Add mochiko, rice flour, sugar and baking powder. Mix until a soft dough forms. If the dough is still wet, add additional white rice flour. Dough should be soft but not sticky. Pinch a little dough and roll in your hands to form a 1” ball. Repeat until all of the dough is used up. Fry the balls in oil for 3-4 minutes or until golden brown. Serve immediately.
